Equipment At Telecentres

All sites have IBM Compatible PCs, there are no Apple Macs. Two sites have only stand alone PCs, one site has Windows for Workgroups, the remaining nine all have Novell Networks.

POI is the County Council's Point Of Information, based on Touch Screen Technology and connected to the Rural Wales Information Network utilising ISDN or Leased Line Connections. The system supplies the community with a whole range of well presented information provided by a variety of organisations throughout rural Wales.

Modems are all 14,400bps v32bis and are currently the main form of communication, although half the sites have/are in the process of getting ISDN-2. The modems are mainly used by the managers for communication with one-another via the private conference on Computer Cafes Bulletin Board System located in Llandrindod Wells.

There are 103 IBM PCs available in the telecentre in the County, that being an average of 8.5 machines per site. 87% of all machines are of 486 specification or better.

Office Equipment

The telecentres also have a wide range of office services equipment, the breakdown is as shown.

Office Services have played a vital role in the income generation abilities of all of the telecottages, with photocopying being the main income generator in 25% of the telecottages over the period May 1994 - May 1995.

Additional equipment is also available at some telecentres - sign making machines, a canon CLC-10 colour scanner/copier/printer with full editing capabilities, audio & transcription equipment, video frame grabbing, an ION camera, franking machine and video training capabilities.
