Heart of Wales Riding School

Horse Riding and equestrian holidays in beautiful rural Mid Wales

At the Heart of Wales Riding School we have over 50 hand picked horses and ponies from Frosty 11.2 hh to Marmalade who is 16.3 hands.

Our facilities include three arenas, one all-weather, a Show Jumping paddock, a Novice Cross-Country Course with 18 fences, an Intermediate Cross-Country Course with 20 fences and a Minimus Course in the orchard.

Instruction is given by British Horse Society qualified and experienced staff who will help you to improve your knowledge in stable management, looking after your horse, and in all spheres of riding, including trekking in our unspoilt countryside.

A rough itinerary of the week’s events is as follows:

Sunday is the start of riding when we will select a horse or pony to suit your experience and weight. You will also be organised into groups according to your ability. We will then assess you, together with your horse, by completing some flat work. You will progress, according to your experience, to Show Jumping and Cross-Country on Monday and Tuesday, and also Wednesday morning. At the end of each day we have Gymkhana practice ready for the Show on Friday.

On Wednesday afternoon you will go to nearby Rhayader to do some shopping and go swimming at the Leisure Centre.

On Thursday you will go for a long ride along the edge of Radnor Forest, and in the evening clean your tack ready for the Show next day.

Friday, the day of the Show, is especially for you to win lots of rosettes! In the morning we will help you to groom and plait your horse for the Tack and Turnout. We then have competitions for Handy Pony, Show Jumping, Minimus Cross Country and, finally, the Gymkhana. A video is made of each day’s activities for you to watch in the evenings to see how you are progressing.

We offer modern, centrally heated, bunkhouse accommodation with five bunkrooms, lounge/dining room and five toilets/showers, catering for 32 unaccompanied 8-18 year olds under 24 hour supervision. We know that you will have lots of horsey friends before you go home. The holiday runs from Saturday to Saturday inclusive, and we would like to you arrive between 4pm and 6pm and depart by 11am. For week ends arrive Friday at 6pm. We can pick you up from Train or Bus Stations or various Airports if arriving from abroad. Some prices and suggestions are on the Booking Form. Please ring to make arrangements.

our cook particularly likes jumping over beer barrels (on a horse of course!)

All you need to bring for riding are comfortable trousers or jodhpurs, shoes or wellingtons with a small heel (NOT TRAINERS) for riding, a waterproof coat and also a towel and swimwear. We can supply hard hats at no extra cost.
